Apple Crisp: Sweetness, Love & Samhain Divination

If one fruit belongs to Samhain, it’s the apple. From bobbing games to peel-tossing divination, apples were believed to hold wisdom and reveal love’s mysteries. To bake with apples at Samhain is to honor their deep symbolism: sweetness, memory, and connection to the spirit world.

This Apple Crisp is simple, comforting, and oh-so-magical. Each bite carries the warmth of cinnamon, the strength of the orchard, and the joy of sharing.

Magical Correspondences

  • Apples – Love, wisdom, otherworld connection, immortality

  • Oats/Crumb Topping – Prosperity, nourishment, strength

  • Sugar & Cinnamon – Sweetness, protection, sacred fire energy

  • Butter – Hearth, fertility, comfort

Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well), peeled and sliced

  • 2 tbsp lemon juice

  • ½ cup sugar (white or brown)

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • ¼ tsp nutmeg

For the topping:

  • 1 cup rolled oats

  • ½ cup flour

  • ½ cup brown sugar

  • ½ cup butter, softened

  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8 baking dish.

  2. Toss apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spread evenly in dish.

  3. In a bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly.

  4. Sprinkle topping over apples.

  5. Bake 35–40 minutes, until topping is golden and apples are bubbling.

  6. Serve warm with cream or ice cream — or share plain, fresh from the oven.

Ritual Notes

  • As you slice the apples, think of the five-pointed star hidden within each one (cut crosswise to reveal it).

  • Stir your topping with intention — adding sweetness and protection to all who will eat.

  • Apple dishes are perfect for ancestor offerings — place a small serving on your altar.

  • If you want to lean into tradition, try a divination game after serving: drop an apple peel over your shoulder and see which letter it forms.
